Bulldogs Hang On for 3-2 Exhibition Win

Elise Kotsakis

Elise Kotsakis scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Bulldogs defeated Ball State by the final score of 3-2 on Friday night. Butler was in action for the first time this season as they hosted the Cardinals in exhibition action at the Butler Bowl.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead into the half and then exploded with two early goals to start the second period. Paige Johnson took a pass from Kotsakis to score the first goal of the game for Butler. Johnson took the pass on the right side of the field and beat the goalkeeper to the far left side to grab the advantage.

The Bulldogs were in control for much of the first half and then quick back-to-back goals pushed the lead to 3-0 at the 50:59 mark. McKenzie Muchow got on the scoreboard with a deflection goal which came from Olivia Colosimo and Kotsakis. Kotsakis made the game 3-0 shortly after with an unassisted goal.

"For the most part we treated this like a real game," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John explained. "There are a lot of things that we can do better, but with that said there were some really special moments with this team. Going up 3-0 against a team like Ball State is impressive."

Ball State made a push at the end of the game to get within a goal of Butler. Erin Greeley scored the first goal of the game for the Cardinals at the 84:15 mark and Elaina Musleh made it a one goal game just minutes later finding the back of the net from 15 yards out.

The Bulldogs used two goalkeepers on Friday with Julie Burton getting the start. Burton made four saves for Butler in just over 76 minutes of action and Jayne Heinrich finished off the final 13:38.

Ball State also used two keepers as Layne Schramm played the first half and backup Brooke Dennis entered for the final 45 minutes of action.

"Overall I am very pleased with the work that has been put in over the last few weeks," St. John added. "I think we are headed in a very positive direction."

The women's soccer team will kickoff the regular season with a road match at Louisville on Friday, Aug. 23. The second game of the season will be played two days later at Indiana State on Sunday, Aug. 25.
