Bulldogs Hold off Wright State 4-3

Elise Kotsakis

DAYTON, Ohio – Butler earned their sixth win of the season on Wednesday night by defeating the Wright State Raiders by the final score of 4-3. WSU tied the game in the 83rd minute of action, but Elise Kotsakis came away with the game-winner off an assist from Katie Griswold.

"Wright State has the ability to make a game extremely awkward for any opponent," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John explained. "They are an under-rated team that has a very direct style of play and they do a great job of picking up second balls. I don't think we dealt with things as well as we are capable of on the defensive end, but I am extremely pleased with the offensive productivity."

Sophia Maccagnone scored the first goal of the game to give Butler a 1-0 lead, but Wright State responded with a goal four minutes later to knot the game at 1-1. Freshman McKenzie Muchow exploded for two goals in the match with the first coming right before halftime and the second in the 58th minute of the match.

"All four of our goals tonight were impressive," St. John added. "Muchow's two goals did not look like the work of a freshman. She continues to get better each game."

The 3-1 advantage wasn't enough on Wednesday night as Ini Umotong single-handedly brought the Raiders back into the game with goals in the 75th and 83rd minute. The Bulldogs didn't let back-to-back goals hurt their chances of winning as Kotsakis sent the game-winner to the back of the net just 39 seconds after Umotong tied the game.

"I thought the response to WSU's third goal was a good testament of where our team's mindset is," St. John said. "We want to win."

Maccagnone scored her fifth goal of the season early in the contest off a double assist from Mary Allen and Olivia Colosimo. Another double assist set up goal two for Butler as Stephanie Kaylor and Elise Kotsakis set up the scoring chance for Muchow in the 37th minute.

The combination of Maccagnone and Muchow hooked up early in the second half as Muchow scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Maccagnone to give the team a 3-1 edge. Kotsakis was able to score the final goal from the left side of the field after a great pass from Katie Griswold.

The Bulldogs out shot Wright State 17-11 overall which included an 11-4 advantage in the second half. Burton made five stops for Butler and the Raiders used both Brooke McCurdy and Halle Pyle between the posts. Each keeper allowed two goals; McCurdy made two saves and Pyle ended the night with four.

Butler will return to action with a road match at IUPUI on Sunday Sept. 22. The BIG EAST opener is also around the corner as Butler will play at Villanova on Sept. 26.
