Champaign, Ill. - The Butler women's soccer team put up a stifling defensive performance against tough competition in its final exhibition tune-up, holding host No. 20 Illinois to just one goal, but one goal would be all the Fighting Illini would need to claim victory as the Bulldogs fell 1-0 on Friday (August 24).
The match would be delayed nearly an hour due to rain.
Illinois' Chichi Nweke tallied the game's only offense in the 67th minute, taking a centering pass and netting a shot from about three yards out.
Butler goalkeepers Annalise Larkin and Jessica Schein worked admirably in the net, combining for nine saves. Forward Lindsey Fox gave the Bulldogs their best offensive chances, training a pair of shots on goal, but the Fighting Illini was able to keep Butler off the board.
The Bulldogs will have nearly a week of preparation time for the regular season opener on Friday (August 31) when they take on Big Ten foe Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio beginning at noon.
