Sophomore midfielder Meredith Buemi's goal late in the second half was the lone tally in the Bulldogs' season-opening 1-0 victory over Ball State. After several missed chances and battling through a rainstorm, the Bulldogs were able to get on the board when Buemi took a backheel pass from Krista Rott, took two touches and sent a low liner to the left corner of the goal.
Buemi's goal was her first on the season. In addition to Rott, freshman Marcie Stucky also was credited with an assist on the score. Butler managed 16 shots, but could only put five on net during the course of the game. Goalkeepers Katie Sanders and Megan Cappa split time between the pipes, with Cappa capturing the victory with one save in the second half.
Butler controlled the ball for much of the game, outshooting the Cardinals 16-5. Ball State only placed two shots on net. Megan Swafford (0-1) took the loss for Ball State, allowing the goal in addition to four saves.
More than 200 fans turned out to Varsity Field for the season opener against the in-state rival Cardinals. Prior to the game, Butler and the team remembered fallen teammate Carrie Colglazier with a moment of silence. Colglazier was tragically killed in an automobile accident in June. She had just completed her freshman year at Butler, appearing in 13 games for the 2002 Bulldogs.
Butler travels to Louisville Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against the Cardinals. Their next home match is Sept. 12 against Indiana at 7 p.m. That match will be played at Lawrence Park.
