Second-Half Goals Propel Bulldogs to Win
Aug. 29, 2004
Juniors Kate Lord and Meredith Buemi scored second-half goals, while the Bulldogs' defense remained strong as visiting Butler posted a 2-0 win at Xavier Sunday afternoon. The win improves the Bulldogs to 1-1 on the young season, while Xavier falls to 0-2. Lord headed in a pass from sophomore Marcie Stucky one minute into the second half to break a scoreless tie. The goal was Butler's first of 2004 and proved to be the game-winner. Buemi added an insurance goal in the 66th minute, as her shot deflected off a Musketeer defender and found the net. "The effort was outstanding today," said coach Woody Sherwood. "We had some of the best individual efforts today that I have seen in my six years here." The Bulldogs defense was solid once again. Freshman goalkeeper Annalise Larkin made three saves in the first half. Larkin has not allowed a goal in her 90 minutes of collegiate action. Sophomore Megan Cappa subbed in at the half and got the win for the Bulldogs to level her record at 1-1 on the year. Xavier's Natalie Baker took the loss, allowing both Butler tallies. Xavier out-shot the Bulldogs, 17-9, but Butler held a 6-5 advantage on shots on goal. However, ten of the Musketeers' shots came in the second half, as the Bulldogs packed their defense in and allowed the home team to shoot from the outside for a majority of the last 15 minutes of the match. The Bulldogs had four corner kicks to the host team's seven. The Bulldogs return to the friendly confines of Varsity Field Thursday for a 4 p.m. match against in-state rival Ball State. The match begins a three-game homestand for the Bulldogs.
