After three matches in 2003, the score is Meredith Buemi three, Butler opponents nothing. The sophomore midfielder scored two first-half goals as the Bulldogs downed Drexel 2-0 in a match played at the U.S. Naval Academy. The Bulldogs improve to 2-0-1 with the victory.
Early in the 14th minute of the match, Deirdre Connor found Buemi on a breakaway. Her shot found the net after hitting the inside of the right post. Sixteen minutes later, senior Amy Pike once again hit Buemi on a breakaway. That tally gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead and the match would finish with the same score.
The Westerville, Ohio native earned Horizon League "Player of the Week" honors for her efforts in the Bulldogs' first two matches. The league office might have no choice but to recognize her again after Friday's match. Buemi now has three goals in three matches. She scored the game-winner late in the second half of Butler's season-opening victory over Ball State.
Katie Sanders played the first half in goal for the Bulldogs, making two saves. As with all three Butler matches, freshman Megan Cappa came on in the second half and finished the game for the Bulldogs. Cappa made three saves in 45 minutes. The duo has now combined for 290 scoreless minutes in three matches to open the season.
Butler will once again play at the U.S. Naval Academy Sunday when the face off against the Tigers of Towson. Coach Woody Sherwood led the Towson program in the two seasons before arriving on the Butler campus. The match begins at noon. Butler returns home Sept. 12 for a match against in-state rival Indiana. The match begins at 7 p.m. at Lawrence Park in Indianapolis.
