Champaign, Ill. - The Butler women's soccer team handed its first win of the season with a 4-2 decision on Friday (Sept. 6). The loss dropped the Bulldogs' record to 2-1 on the season while the Fighting Illini improved to 1-2.
Illinois got the scoring started just 9:36 into the game sophomore Rachel Pivarnik connected with freshman Meredith Buemi who blooped a shot over Illinois keeper Leisha Alcia's reach. However, the Illini countered 3:05 later when Becca Johnson set up Tara Hurless for her first goal of the night to tie the score at 1-1.
Buemi responded just 1:27 later with an unassisted goal to put the Bulldogs back on top 2-1 only 14 minutes into the contest. The Illini once again tied the score, and the culprit was once again Tara Hurless as freshman Paula Faherty set up Hurless for her second goal of the evening at the 32:14 mark of the first-half. The score would remain tied as the two teams headed to the locker room for halftime.
In the second half, the Illini took their first lead of the game, 3-2, when senior Tara Schuling fired a rocket from 25 yards out that ripped the upper right corner of the net in the 60th minute. Tiffani Walker and Alaree Gunville assisted on the goal. The Illini then sealed the victory with just 3:09 remaining when senior Meghan Kolze hammed home a penalty kick to set the final score at 4-2. The kick was awarded after a Butler player was called for a handball inside the penalty box.
The Illini were very aggressive on the night firing 26 shots to Butler's 12. Butler junior Amber Stauch posted six saves in the goal, while Alcia tallied four saves for the Fighting Illini.
Butler will host Western Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 8) in it's first home contest of the season. The Bulldogs will battle it out against the Broncos at noon at Varsity Fields.
