Normal, Ill. - Illinois State netted the first goal of the match just over five minutes before the break and added another barely three minutes after the half, as the host Redbirds handed the Bulldogs a 2-0 defeat on Sunday (Sept. 21) afternoon.
Raquel Rattray hit a 25-yard strike into the upper right corner of the goal in the 40th minute of play to break what had been a scoreless opening period up until that point. The Butler defense managed to hold the Redbirds to just the one score in the first half despite being out-shot 14-0 in the frame.
Mel Routledge added an insurance mark soon after the break in the 49th minute of play.
The Bulldogs attempted to make up the difference, out-shooting the Redbirds 7-3 from that point on, but Butler would be unable to find the back of the net.
"We tried to win a game in 20 minutes after digging ourselves a 2-0 hole," head coach Tari St. John said. "Simply, we need to accept that we played poorly, learn from it and move on."
Butler returns to Indianapolis on Friday (Sept. 26) when it opens up Horizon League play against Valparaiso beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Butler Bowl.
