Valparaiso, Ind. - Sophomore Abbie Kaul netted her first goal of the season to give the Bulldogs the lead and junior Angie Muir added an insurance tag in the waning minutes as Butler shut-down host Valparaiso for a 2-0 victory at Eastgate Field on Sunday (Sept. 30) afternoon.
"A change in mentality emerged today for us," head coach Tari St. John said. "Valpo had the wind in the second half, and they came out hard but our response was tremendous. We kept our composure and, very confidently, secured the win."
Kaul broke a scoreless contest in the 20th minute of play, drilling a set piece from 30 yards out into the lower left corner of the net for her first score of the year.
Muir added a late insurance goal in the 87th minute off a penalty kick following a Valpo foul on freshman Lindsey Fox in the box.
Meanwhile, the Butler defense clamped down for its first shut-out victory of the season and its win in league play.
"This is the second game in a row that Fox has earned us a PK," St. John added. "She is so dangerous in the attacking third.
"Kaul has been looking to help lead our first shutout of the season. Not only did she help accomplish that today but she also earned the game winner. She has really stepped up this year."
The Bulldogs improve to 3-6-1 on the year and 1-1 in Horizon League play, while the Crusaders drop to 6-5-0 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Butler returns to action on Friday (Oct. 5) when they take on Wright State beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Dayton, Ohio.
