Butler Captures Home Win Over Xavier, 2-0

Oct. 3, 2008

Box Score

Juniors Molly Kruger and Carrie Twyman each had a goal and an assist to help lead Butler to a 2-0 victory over visiting Xavier in a non-league match at the Butler Bowl on Friday (Oct. 3). The win was Butler's third in a row and lifted the Bulldogs to 7-5 on the season.

The Bulldogs, who unleashed 17 shots in the match, were in command from the start. Twyman gave Butler an early 1-0 lead on a nifty chip shot over Xavier goalkeeper Kelly Farrell from 20 yards out less than 11 minutes into the contest. It was her fifth goal of the season. Kruger started the play with a centering pass and picked up her fourth assist of the season.

Twyman returned the favor in the second half at 58:54, taking a long pass from junior Abbie Kaul and then serving a cross to Kruger in front of the goal. Kruger fired a shot that deflected off of Farrell and into the upper left-hand corner of the net. It was Kruger's team-high sixth goal of the season, while Twyman picked up her fifth assist. The assist for Kaul was her third.

"We're continuing to get consistent play from Molly and Carrie, and that's a real plus," said Butler head coach Tari St. John after the match. "And I felt that Courtney Lord has continued to play well for us. She wins so many balls and battles so hard, and she keeps our midfield organized."

The Bulldogs out-shot Xavier 7-4 in the first half and 10-4 in the final period. Butler had eight shots on goal to three for the visiting Musketeers, and the Bulldogs had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Baker went the distance for the Bulldogs and recorded her second shutout of the season. She had three saves in the match and improved to 7-4 on the season.

Butler will return to Horizon League play on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Detroit. The road contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. (ET).
