Two Second-Half Goals Push Bison Past Butler
Oct. 11, 2004
Butler got on the board first Monday against North Dakota State, but the Bison were able to use two second-half goals to take a 2-1 decision at Varsity Field. For the Bulldogs, freshman Ashley Twehues netted the second goal of her collegiate career off a feed from junior Meredith Buemi thirty minutes into the match to stake the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead. With the win, NDSU improves to 4-6-1, while the Bulldogs fall to 4-7-2.
Buemi flicked a pass to Twehues, who shot to the top left corner to beat the Bison's goalie Kelli Reed. That tally would prove to be the only one of the half. In the second half, NDSU got goals in the 49th and 59th minutes to take a 2-1 advantage and held off a late Butler charge to take the win.
Butler out-shot the Bison, 23-11, in the match and had three corner kicks to NDSU's one. Senior Katie Sanders started in goal for the Bulldogs and made five saves. Sophomore Caitlin Gill led the team with six shots.
The Bulldogs travel to Wisconsin for an important set of league matches this weekend. Butler plays UW-Green Bay Friday at 7 p.m. and then Sunday at noon against UW-Milwaukee. The next home match for the Bulldogs comes Sunday, Oct. 24 against league foe Cleveland State at noon.
