Junior forward Krista Rott deflected a shot into the goal with less than 14 minutes remaining to give Butler a 1-0 victory over visiting Illinois State in a non-conference match at cold and wet Varsity Field on Friday, Oct. 25. The win lifted Butler to 11-4 on the season, while Illinois State fell to 11-3-1.

The game-winning goal came at 76:01. Butler's Deidre Connor dropped a short pass to senior Amy Morrison on the left side of the goal, and Morrison blasted a shot at the right post from 15 yards away. Rott charged in from the right side and deflected the shot past Illinois State goalkeeper Allison Farrington and into the right side of the net.

It was Rott's seventh goal of the season, and it gave the Bulldogs one of their biggest wins of the year!

"Anytime you can beat a team with 11 wins it's a great win," said Butler head coach Woody Sherwood. "Our last four matches with Illinois State have been one goal matches, and we've been fortunate now to win the last two."

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, which was played in a light rain. Illinois State had a 4-3 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes, but the Bulldogs had the two best scoring opportunities. Freshman Meredith Buemi took a pass from Rott on the right side and fired an open shot from 15 yards out that Farrington stopped.

Later in the first half, Buemi had a one-on-one break-away on Farrington, but the ball slipped away and Farrington made a diving stop before Buemi good finish the play.

Butler's defense recorded its fourth shutout of the season, with goalkeeper Katie Sanders picking up her second shutout. Sanders had three saves in the contest.

"We played well on defense," added Sherwood. "Annie Doerr did a great job of filling in for (injured) Hadiatu (Dumbuya) and getting our defense going."

The Bulldogs finished with a 13-8 edge in shots. Morrison led the way with six shots, while Rott added a pair. Michelle Brumbaugh and Diana Puckett each had two shots for Illinois State.

Butler will be on the road for its next two games, beginning with a non-league game at Valparaiso on Sunday, Oct. 27. Gametime at Valparaiso will be 12 noon.
