Allison Brunner scored less than two minutes into the match to lead #6 UW-Green Bay to a 1-0 upset of #3 Butler in the opening round of the 2004 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis on Thursday (Nov. 4). The victory sends the Phoenix (5-10-3) into a semifinals match against #2 Detroit on Friday, Nov. 5. Butler ends its season with a 7-10-2 overall record.
Brunner provided the only score of the match at 1:53. She fired a shot from the top of the box past Butler goalkeeper Katie Sanders to give the Phoenix the early edge. It was Brunner's second goal of the season and wound up as the game-winner.
Butler, out-shot 6-4 in the first half, turned up the pressure in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Bulldogs out-shot UW-Green Bay 7-1 in the final period, including several opportunities in the final six minutes. Marianne Schilling had a shot on goal for the Bulldogs with less than two minutes remaining, but UWGB goalkeeper Brooke Wikgren came up with the save.
Wikgren finished the match with four saves, while Sanders wound up with two. Butler had an 11-7 advantage in shots for the match and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
