Loyola's Mary Dale scored with just over a minute remaining in the match to give host Loyola a 1-0 upset of second-seeded Butler in the first round of the Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship in Chicago, Ill., on Thursday, Nov. 6. The Bulldogs ended the season with an 8-9-2 record.
"Obviously we're pretty upset right now," said coach Woody Sherwood. "If ever there was a team that deserved to win a match, it was our team tonight. Unfortunately in soccer, that's not the way it always works out.
"I have to give Loyola credit. They capitalized on one of the few chances they had."
Dale broke a scoreless tie with 1:03 left in the contest. She beat Butler goalkeeper Katie Sanders with a header off a free kick by Jamie Wasielewski. The victory sends Loyola into a semifinal match against UW-Green Bay.
Butler had eight shots in the match, including six shots on goal. Dale's tally was Loyola's only shot on goal in the contest. Kate Lord led Butler with two shots.
