Chicago, Ill. - A goal by defender Maite Bastyr brought the No. 4 seeded Bulldogs back from a 1-0 deficit late in the second period, but top-seeded and host Loyola picked up the game-winner less than six minutes later and held on down the stretch in eliminating Butler, 2-1, at Loyola Soccer Park on Friday (Nov. 7) evening.
Butler entered the match trying to pick up its second win over the Ramblers this season. The Bulldogs handed Loyola its only Horizon League defeat of the year in a 1-0, double-overtime victory on Oct. 12.
The match began slowly, with the Bulldogs controlling tempo for the first 15 minutes before the Ramblers netted the first score of the afternoon on a deflected shot from Cynthia Morote-Ariza in the 32nd minute.
Loyola maintained its edge into the break and through the first 25 minutes of the second period before Bastyr provided the Bulldogs with their offense in the 71st minute of play. Molly Kruger sent an arcing shot off a corner kick over traffic to the far side of the goal, where Bastyr settled the ball before drilling her second mark of the year.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as Morote-Ariza once again gave the Ramblers the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute. Butler would try to answer with another tying mark, but to no avail.
The Bulldogs end the season at 11-11-0.
