Bulldogs Advance to Horizon League Tournament Semifinals

Nov. 9, 2001

DETROIT, Mich. - The Butler women's soccer team defeated Youngstown State 2-0 today (Nov. 8) in the first round of the Horizon League Women's Soccer Tournament, advancing to the semifinals. This win marks the season's 12th victory for head coach Woody Sherwood's Bulldogs, tying a school record set during the 1996 and 1997 season. Butler, the No. 2 seed in the Tournament, now holds a 12-6 overall mark, while the No. 7 Penguins ended the season winless in league action.

YSU held the Bulldogs scoreless for the first 54 minutes of the match, but Butler's first team All-Horizon League selection Amy Morrison broke the 0-0 tie off of an assist from Kristin Drogell. With the goal, Morrison moved into a first-place tie with former Butler player Chris Johnson, with 37 points in a single season. Johnson set her mark during the 1994 campaign.

Sophomore midfielder Amy Pike would net Butler's second goal of the afternoon in the 89th minute, off of an assist from Martha Gudiel, who earned second team All Horizon League honors this season for her efforts on the field.

The Bulldogs outshot Youngstown State 15-2 on the game. Kara White had both shots for the Penguins. Butler goalie Amber Stauch had two saves on the match, while recording her fifth shutout of the season.

In other first round action, No. 3 Wright State topped No. 6 Loyola 1-0, setting up the second round match-up between the Bulldogs and the Raiders. Butler, which defeated Wright State 5-4 in a double-overtime victory on Nov. 2, will face the Raiders tomorrow (Nov. 9) at 2 p.m. at Titan Field.
