Gudiel's Goal Helps Butler Knock Off Wright State, 1-0
Nov. 10, 2001
DETROIT, Mich. - Junior Martha Gudiel connected on a goal with just under ten minutes to play helping the Butler women's soccer team knock off Wright State, 1-0 in the Horizon League Women's Soccer Championships on Friday (Nov. 9) at Titan Field. The win advances the No. 2 seeded Bulldogs to the championship game of the tournament. The victory also sets a new Butler single-season record for wins, as the Bulldogs improve to 13-6 on the year. Wright State, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, ends its season with a 10-8 mark.
After a scoreless first half, the two teams stood strong defensively throughout the first part of the second period, until Gudiel's goal at the 80:08 mark off of an assist from freshman Rachel Pivarnik would put the Bulldogs on top for good.
Butler attempted six shots on the match, while the Raiders were held to only four shots. Amber Stauch, who was cited to the All-League second team, recorded two saves in the game for the Bulldogs, while tallying her sixth shutout of the season.
Butler will face UW-Milwaukee on Sunday at noon (EST) at Detroit's Titan Field in the championship game. The top-seeded Panthers, which defeated Detroit 2-0 in today's semifinals, beat Butler, 1-0, in the two teams' only meeting of the season back on Oct. 21.
