The Butler women's soccer team heads to Columbus, Ohio on Friday (Aug. 31) when it opens the regular season with a 12:00 noon match against Ohio State. The Bulldogs then return to the Hoosier State on Sunday when they square off with Ball State in Muncie, Ind. on Sunday (Sept. 2) beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Both Butler foes are ranked among the top 15 in the Great Lakes Region, according to Soccer Buzz Magazine, with the Buckeyes checking in at No. 7 and the Cardinals at No. 13.
The Bulldogs are coming off of a strong exhibition performance last Friday (Aug. 24) against nationally-ranked Illinois, holding the Fighting Illini scoreless for nearly 70 minutes before falling 1-0. Butler picked up a win in its first exhibition contest against Eastern Illinois on Aug. 18, with junior Angie Muir netting a goal with just under five minutes remaining.
Butler will feature a class of newcomers that is ranked second-best in the Horizon League and 25th-best in the Great Lakes Region according to Soccer Buzz. The Bulldogs also return four of its top five goal scorers from the 2006 squad, including Muir (six), junior Jenny Southard (four), sophomore Carrie Twyman (four) and sophomore Abbie Kaul (two).
Head coach Tari St. John enters her second season at the helm after guiding the Bulldogs to an appearance in the Horizon League Championship semifinals last year.
