Pendleton, Ind. - Freshman pitcher Breanna Fisher dealt a brilliant complete-game effort, while the Butler bats manufactured all the run support the rookie right-hander would need, as the No. 5 seed Bulldogs picked up a 2-0 victory to the seventh-seeded Phoenix home from the Horizon League Championship on Friday (May 8) evening at Legends Field.
Butler (25-27) will live to play another day with the win, moving on to face No. 4 seed Loyola on Saturday (May 9) morning at 9:00 a.m.
Fisher handcuffed the Phoenix through seven innings, scattering four hits and allowing just one walk while striking out five en route to her 13th win of the season. Only one Green Bay base-runner made it past first base in the entire game, as the Englewood, Ohio, native set down the first eight batters she faced before working out of a first and third situation in the fourth.
The offense would pick up the only scoring it would need in the first, as Alex Boros led off with a single to left, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Paige Ashton, took third on a single by Bridget Paine and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Erin Falkenberry.
Butler tacked on what would amount to an insurance run in the fifth, as Mallory Winters worked a bases-loaded, two-out walk.
Paine led the way at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, Boros picked up two hits and a run scored and Ashton added a hit and run of her own.
