Dawgs Take Two From Crosstown Rival IUPUI
The Bulldogs move to 19-4 on the season after taking both games against crosstown rival IUPUI (4-16) at the IUPUI Softball Complex on Mar. 23. Butler took the first of two games 5-2 and went on to win the second game of the doubleheader 7-1. Jenny Esparza and Breanna Fisher held the IUPUI hitters in check while the Butler lineup took care of the rest.
In the first game Esparza earned the win allowing two runs in five innings of work. Fisher was called on to save the first game and did so allowing only one hit in the process. The majority of the run support in the first game came from a group of sophomores. Mallory Winters knocked in two of Butler's runs as part of a 2-4 effort at the plate. Winters also recorded nine outs in the field. Lauren McNulty (2-3) and Kayla Gray (1-3) each added and RBI of their own.
The second game of the doubleheader Fisher picked up where she left off in the first game not allowing a run until the third inning. That was the first and only time the Jaguars were able to push a run across on Fisher in her nine total innings of work. The bats came alive in the second game as the Bulldogs scored seven runs on 15 hits. Eight Butler players recorded at least one hit and six players had two or more hits in the game. Gray led the team with three hits in the game. Paine (2-4) led the team with three RBIs. In the field sophomore Erin Falkenberry recorded eight of the 21 defensive outs for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will head to Terra Haute, Ind. on Mar. 24 to play two games against the Sycamores of Indiana State (11-8). The Bulldogs won both games against the Sycamores in 2009 at the Butler Softball Field. Butler will begin league play Saturday Mar. 27 when they host Loyola.
