The Butler softball team (26-6) tied the school record of 26 wins in a season with two against Youngstown State Saturday Apr. 3 at McCune Park. The Bulldogs took the first game 6-0 behind great pitching and an explosive sixth inning offensively and the pitching and hitting continued in the second game as the Bulldogs scored early and often to win in five innings 9-0.
Annie Dolan started and ended the sixth inning that would secure a win for the Bulldogs. The Dawgs had three hits in the first five innings before they posted five hits including two doubles to score four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Lauren McNulty doubled in both Dolan and Bridget Paine and eventually scored on a single by Meaghan Sullivan. Jenny Esparza was in the circle for the Bulldogs and went seven scoreless innings. Esparza only allowed three hits while striking out 12.
The Bulldogs continued where they left off in the first game scoring early and often against the Penguins in the second game. Butler only needed five innings in the second game in order to beat Youngstown State. Jennifer Chasteen and Breanna Fisher combined to allow only two hits over the five innings. Paine led the way offensively going 3-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Nine different Butler batters recorded a hit in the game. Erin Falkenbery matched Paine’s two runs and two RBIs in a 2-3 game at the plate.
The Bulldogs will finish up the current road trip with the series finale against Youngstown State scheduled for noon on Sunday Apr. 4. The Bulldogs will be playing for the most wins in school history on Sunday.
