Freshman Jenny Esparza went 10 complete innings while Meaghan Sullivan went 3-3 at the plate to help lift Butler to a 3-2 victory over UIC (9-26) on Sunday Apr. 11 during a “Strike out Breast Cancer” game at the Butler Softball Field. The game took 10 innings and two hours and 50 minutes before Senior Annie Dolan scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the 10th inning.
Esparza was dominant for the Bulldogs throwing over 180 pitches in 10 innings of work. Jenny allowed only two runs on six hits while striking out 17 UIC batters. The win was Esparza’s 13th on the season.
At the plate freshman Meaghan Sullivan hit two doubles during her 3-3 day at the plate. Sullivan also recorded an RBI and a walk on the day. Sophomore Erin Falkenberry recorded a multi-hit game of her own going 2-4 while scoring a run. Falkenberry knocked in Butler’s second run of the game on a single in the third inning.
In the tenth inning, Dolan and Senior Bridget Paine started the inning off with back to back singles. The two were then moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Falkenberry. Dolan then scored three pitches later on a wild pitch by Devin Miller.
Nearly all of the damage done by the Flames came from Melinda Macias and Brooke Frydendall, who accounted for four of the visitors' six hits. Macias was 2-4 on the day and scored twice. Frydendall went 2-5 with two RBIs.
The Bulldogs, who recorded their school-record 31st victory, will take a couple days off before returning to action on Saturday, April 17, against Detroit in a Horizon League doubleheader. The two teams will close out the three-game series on April 18. The Detroit series will be Senior Recognition Weekend for the Bulldogs.
