The Bulldogs (33-9) took both games in five innings on the first day of Senior Weekend against Detroit (2-27) on Saturday Apr. 17 at the Butler Softball Field. Butler pitchers allowed only two hits on the day while Butler hitters amassed 11 hits in each game. Freshman Meaghan Sullivan led the charge offensively with three doubles on the day. Eleven different Butler hitters recorded a hit on the day.
Sullivan went 3-4 in the first game, including two doubles. Senior Melissa Shofroth stretched the Butler lead to seven with a pinch hit two run homerun in the fifth inning. Lauren McNulty ended the first game on a single that scored Bridget Paine from third base. Jennifer Chasteen gave up only one hit in five scoreless innings of work. Kristie Malinkey came in and threw one scoreless inning allowing no hits.
The Bulldogs started the second game with back to back doubles by Seniors Annie Dolan and Bridget Paine and ended up with seven runs in the first inning. Paines double knocked in her 38 RBI of the season tying the school record. McNulty belted a homerun in the second inning to make the Butler lead nine. Then Devin Dearing followed with a single and eventually scored on a RBI double by Alyssa Coleman to plate the Bulldogs’ final run of the game. Esparza started the game for the Bulldogs and threw three perfect innings before giving way to Breanna Fisher. Esparza struck out seven of the nine batters she faced as she matched the school record for wins with her 15th of the season.
Butler and Detroit will play the finale of the three game weekend series tomorrow Apr. 18 at noon at the Butler Softball field. Sunday will be Senior Day for the softball team and the five Butler seniors will be honored before the start of the game. The five senior softball players are Jennifer Arriaga, Annie Dolan, Kristie Malinkey, Bridget Paine and Melissa Shofroth.
