Butler Falls In Final Regular Season Game

GREEN BAY, WIS. -- Butler allowed just four hits and blanked host Green Bay in five of six innings, but still came up on the short end of a 4-2 score in the final game of a three-game Horizon League series at Ben Garot Field on Thursday (May 6).  The setback closed out Butler’s regular season schedule.

Green Bay (24-18, 9-11) did all of it damage in the second inning.  Two infield errors and a walk loaded the bases, and with two outs, Sara Junion launched a grand slam home run to left-center field to clear the bases.  The four unearned runs were all that Green Bay starter Katie Cooney (10-9) needed.

Cooney hurled her third consecutive complete game, allowing just two runs on five hits.  She picked up win in each game of the three-game sweep.

Butler scored it first run in the third inning.  Senior Annie Dolan reach on an infield error and with one out, scored on a single by sophomore Erin Falkenberry.  The Bulldogs’ final run came in the seventh inning on a single by Melissa Shofroth, a double by Dolan and an infield ground out by Lauren McNulty.

Freshman Jenny Esparza (17-10) went the distance on the mound for the Bulldogs.  She struck out seven and walked two in the contest.

The Bulldogs, who finished the season with a six-game losing skid, dropped to 35-17 on the year and 11-11 in the Horizon League.
