INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler will end a nine-day layoff when it
faces defending champion Wright State in the first round of the
2011 Horizon League Softball Championship on Wednesday, May 11, at
1:30 p.m. (CT). The league tournament will be hosted by
top-seeded Loyola at the Loyola Softball Park, May 11-14.
The Bulldogs, who earned the No. 3 seed in this year’s tournament, wrapped up the regular season on May 1 with a victory over Loyola. That win gave Butler a 28-22 regular season record and a 14-8 Horizon League mark. The 28 wins, under first-year head coach Scott Hall, are the second-most in school history.
Butler dropped three consecutive one-run games to #6-seed Wright State (13-11) during the regular season, including one in extra innings. The Raiders won each of the games in their final at-bat, and the three losses knocked Butler out of first place in the Horizon League standings.
Cleveland State (13-8), the No. 4 seed, will open this year’s tournament against No. 5 seed UIC (11-9) at 11 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday. The winner of that game will face No. 1 seed Loyola (16-7) on Thursday, May 12, at 11 a.m. The winner of the Butler-Wright State contest will play No. 2 seed Valparaiso (15-7) at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The double-elimination tournament will conclude on Saturday, May
