Jenny Esparza Earns All-Region Honors
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Sophomore Jenny Esparza, who helped Butler
to 32 victories and a runner-up finish in the Horizon League, has
been named to the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association
(NFCA) All-Midwest Region Team. She was the lone Butler
athlete and one of three league players named to the honor
Esparza, the 2011 Horizon League Pitcher of the Year, compiled an 18-10 record with a 1.67 earned run average this past season. She had 268 strikeouts, 19 complete games and six shutouts. Her 18 victories tied the Butler record that she set a year ago as a freshman. Esparza was named first team All-Horizon League and was chosen to the Horizon League All-Tournament Team.
The talented righthander became Butler’s all-time leader in strikeouts during the past season. She holds Butler’s single game (18), single season (307) and career (575) records for strikeouts after just two seasons.
Esparza was one of five pitchers named to the All-Midwest Region squad. Morgan Melloh of Indiana and Chelsea Thomas of Missouri was selected to the first team, while Amanda Crabtree of Houston and Ashley Hagemann of Nebraska joined the Butler pitcher on the second team.
Also chosen second team All-Midwest Region from the Horizon League were shortstop Tess Sito of Cleveland State and outfielder Sara Strickland of Valparaiso.
