CHICAGO - The Butler softball team split a doubleheader at UIC Sunday afternoon, slugging its way to a 10-5 win in the first game before dropping a 2-1 pitcher's duel in game 2. Senior outfielder Erin Jackson had five hits on the day to lead the Bulldogs.
Jackson went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot, sophomore Meaghan Sullivan drove in three runs and junior Lauren McNulty had a triple and two doubles as BU routed UIC in the first game of the day. McNulty tripled to highlight a three-run top of the 3rd for the Bulldogs, who would lead 4-0 after Mallory Winters added an RBI single in the 4th inning.
UIC closed to within 4-2 before Butler pulled away with a big top of the 5th. Jackson smacked an RBI single through the right side and Sullivan followed that with a three-run double. Junior Erin Falkenberry then added an RBI double to right and the rout was on.
Butler led the second game for most of the day before UIC pulled out the win in the end. Jackson went 3-for-4 and Sullivan added a 2-for-4 effort but the Bulldogs couldn't get any other hits. Jackson scored in the 1st and the lead held until the bottom of the 5th, when UIC scored twice. A single and a sac fly gave the Flames the lead, and with UIC pitcher Ashley Hewett cruising in the circle, the Flames held off the Bulldogs.
Butler (13-9, 1-1 HL) will play its next nine games on the road. BU is at IPFW for two games Wednesday, March 30.
