DETROIT - Junior Erin Falkenberry hit three home runs and drove in six runs and sophomore Jenny Esparza pitched a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the Butler softball team dominated Detroit, 11-1, Sunday in five innings. The Bulldogs are now 4-1 in Horizon League play.
Falkenberry, in four plate appearances, walked and then homered in her next three at-bats. She swatted a solo home run in the 3rd inning, a two-run homer in the 4th and finished with a three-run shot in the 5th. She also scored four runs.
Junior Jessica Huey added a home run of her own as Butler first five hitters each had a multi-hit game. As a team, the Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits.
In addition to BU's potent offensive attack, Esparza dominated the game in the circle. She recorded 15 outs, fanning 13 and allowing just one unearned run. Esparza struck out six of the first seven batters she faced and walked three. Only two batted balls left the infield all day and only two baserunners advanced as far as third base.
Butler (16-11, 4-1 HL), which scored 28 run in three games at Detroit, will play at Dayton Wednesday, April 6 and at Notre Dame the day after that.
