Bulldogs Split Two Games At Evansville Tournament

EVANSVILLE, IND. -- Sophomore Leah Bry tossed a one-hit shutout and Butler rolled to an 8-0 victory over Detroit in the first game of the Evansville Tournament at Cooper Stadium in Evansville, Ind., on Saturday, Feb. 25.  The Bulldogs dropped the second game in the tournament to UMKC, 2-0.

Bry allowed a one-out single in the top of the first inning and then retired 17 of the next 20 batters she faced.  She struck out back-to-back hitters to end the first inning and added six more strikeouts over the next five innings.  The Bulldogs ended the game on the eight-run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Butler took control of the game with four runs in the bottom of the second inning.  The Bulldogs had four hits in the inning and the rally was aided by a pair of Detroit errors and a hit batter.  Callie Dennison, Kayla Gray, Jessica Huey and Lauren McNulty each picked up a run batted in during the rally.

McNulty added a second run-scoring single in the fifth inning, and the Bulldogs scored a second run on a sacrifice fly by Angelique Zadrozny.  Butler then ended the game on back-to-back home runs by Devin Dearing and Maria Leichty to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning.

McNulty, Dearing, Leichty and Dennison each had two hits in the win.

UMKC ended a scoreless deadlock in the fifth inning of the second game on a pair of singles and a throwing error and then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.  Two UMKC pitchers combined to blank the Bulldogs on five hits.

Junior Jenny Esparza went the distance for Butler and suffered her second defeat of the season.  She allowed just five hits and recorded nine strikeouts, while walking three.

The Bulldogs will wrap up play at Evansville on Sunday, Feb. 26, with games against UMKC and host Evansville.
