INDIANAPOLIS - Some late-inning runs in both games lifted IPFW to a pair of wins over the Butler softball team on Monday. IPFW, which improved to 19-5 on the year, defeated Butler 4-1 in the first game and 3-1 in the nightcap.
Leading 2-1 after six innings, the Mastodons scored a run in the top of the 6th and 7th to pull away in the first game. Kayti Hanson drew a bases-loaded walk in the 6th to move IPFW to a 3-1 lead. An RBI single by pinch hitter Cassie Wolfe in the top of the 7th provided the final margin. Butler put runners at second and third in the 7th but couldn't find the tying hit.
IPFW's Courtney Cronin pitched 6.2 innings for the win, striking out seven and allowing just one unearned run. However, she did walk seven Bulldog batters, but the Dawgs couldn't cash in on the pitcher's mistakes. Sophomore Leah Bry and senior Breanna Fisher split the innings for the Bulldogs.
In the second game, IPFW got an unearned run in the 1st inning but the Dawgs answered to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th. Senior Lauren McNulty doubled to right and scored on a wild pitch. The two-bagger by McNulty was Butler's only extra-base hit of the day.
With the game tied 1-1, IPFW pulled away with a pair of runs in the top of the 5th. Wolfe doubled and her pinch runner, Jessica Haskins, scored on a sacrifice by Hanson. The play was controversial, in that Butler third baseman Krista Hakola nearly tagged Haskins on the play. She was called safe, and IPFW went ahead 2-1. The Mastodons got their final run on an RBI single by Larissa Franklin.
Megan Flenniken was the winning pitcher for IPFW. Fisher pitched all seven frames for BU, striking out five against no walks. She allowed just two earned runs. Offensively, four different Butler players had one hit each.
Butler (4-15) will play a home doubleheader Thursday, March 22 vs. Miami (Ohio).
