Butler Falls In Series Finale At Youngstown State
CANFIELD, OHIO -- Host Youngstown State used the long ball to claim a 4-1 victory over Butler in the final game of a three-game Horizon League series at McCune Park in Canfield, Ohio, on Sunday, March 25. The win gave the Penguins the series, 2-1.
Youngstown State (15-6) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a leadoff home run by Haley Thomas and a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Sarah Gabel. Vicky Rumph added a two-run, home run in the bottom of the third inning.
The Bulldogs (5-19) tallied their lone run in the top of the sixth inning on a bases-loaded walk to senior Erin Falkenberry. Kayla Gray opened the inning with a single to leftfield, and Cassie Rupel reached on an error. Meaghan Sullivan singled up the middle to load the bases before Falkenberry's walk.
Youngstown State pitchers Hana Somogyi (6 innings) and Casey Crozier (one inning) combined to limit Butler to a single run on four hits. The two pitchers combined for eight strikeouts and just one walk.
Sullivan led Butler with a pair of hits, including a double.
Senior Breanna Fisher lasted just one-third of an inning as Butler's starting pitcher, and she suffered her seventh loss in nine decisions. Sophomore Leah Bry pitched the final five-and-two thirds innings for the Bulldogs.
Butler will play non-conference doubleheaders at Eastern Illinois on Tuesday (March 27) and at Michigan State on Thursday (March 29) before returning home to host Loyola in a three-game Horizon League series on Saturday and Sunday, March 31-April 1.
