Butler Drops Series Finale At Green Bay
GREEN BAY, WIS. -- Host Green Bay unloaded 13 hits and 11 runs in four innings and rolled past Butler, 11-3, in a run-shortened game at Ben Garot Field on Sunday, April 15. The win in the final game of a three-game Horizon League series gave the Phoenix the series edge, 2-1.
Butler (16-25, 6-6 HL) fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, but battled back to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the third frame. Senior Lauren McNulty doubled to lead off the second inning and later scored on a single by senior Mallory Winters.
The Bulldogs then moved in front in the third on a single by junior Kayla Gray, a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Callie Dennison, a run-scoring double by freshman Kristen Boros and a bases-loaded walk to senior Erin Falkenberry.
But Green Bay answered with three runs in the bottom of the third and then put the game away with six runs in the fourth. The six-run rally included a three-run, home run by designated hitter Paige Newtols.
The Phoenix scored five runs off of Butler starter Leah Bry (4-14) and then tallied three runs each off of relief pitchers Breanna Fisher and Cassie Rupel. The Bulldogs managed just four hits off of Green Bay pitchers Allison Goecks and Ashley Nannemann (9-8).
Butler will begin a six-game league homestand on Tuesday, April 17, with a doubleheader against Wright State. The first game will start at 3 p.m., at the Butler Softball Field.
