Bulldogs Split Twinbill With Wright State

Bulldogs Split Twinbill With Wright State

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Butler picked up two strong pitching performances from sophomore Leah Bry, but one rough inning left the Bulldogs with a split of two games against Horizon League foe Wright State at the Butler Softball Field on Tuesday, April 17.

The Bulldogs captured the opener, 5-1, with some timely hitting and a distance pitching effort by Bry.  Wright State bounced back in the nightcap to take a 3-2 decision, despite another solid performance by the Butler righthander.

Butler ended the day at 17-26 overall and 7-7 in Horizon League play, while Wright State finished at 18-24 on the season and 6-8 in league action.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game series with a single game on Wednesday, April 18.  The game at the Butler Softball Field will start at 2 p.m.

Game 1 - Butler 5, Wright State 1
Bry limited the Raiders to one run on nine hits and senior Alyssa Coleman delivered the game's biggest blow with a bases-loaded double to lift Butler to a victory in the first game of the league doubleheader.  The Bulldogs never trailed in the game, while picking up their seventh league victory.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a run-scoring double by senior Mallory Winters.  Senior Lauren McNulty opened the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on Winters' drive off the left field wall.

That lead climbed to 4-0 in the fourth innings when the Bulldogs loaded the bases off of Wright State starter Krystian DeWitt.  That set the stage for Coleman, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter and delivered a drive off the wall in left-center.  Junior Meaghan Sullivan, McNulty and freshman Maria Leichty all scored on the play.

The Raiders scored a single run in the fifth inning, while Butler answered with its final run when McNulty stole home on the back half of an attempted double-steal in the sixth inning.

Bry had nine strikeouts and just one walk in her complete game effort.  The Bulldogs' five runs came on just five hits, including two by McNulty.

Game 2 - Wright State 3, Butler 2
Wright State scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning and then held on behind pitchers DeWitt and Chelsea Contant to earn a split against the Bulldogs.  The two Wright State pitchers blanked Butler over the final four innings of the game.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Sullivan, and a 2-1 lead in the third on singles by sophomore Callie Dennison and freshman Kristen Boros and a fielding error by Wright State.

But the Raiders took advantage of a walk and two Butler errors to score two runs without the benefit of a hit in the fifth inning.

Butler loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but DeWitt wiggled off the hook by sandwiching two fly ball outs around a strikeout.  DeWitt pitched the first six innings and picked up the win, while Contant blanked the Bulldogs in the seventh inning and earned a save.

Bry allowed just five hits and finished with six strikeouts and two walks, while recording a second distance performance.  Dennison had two of Butler's six hits in the game.
