Bulldogs Fall At Cleveland State
CLEVELAND, OHIO -- Rain captured one game and Cleveland State held off a late Butler rally to take the second contest, 7-5, in a scheduled Horizon League doubleheader at Viking Field in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, April 28. The same two teams will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 29..
The Bulldogs (21-30, 11-11 HL), who went hitless through the first five innings, exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Highlighting the rally was a three-run, home run by senior Erin Falkenberry, her eighth of the season. The round-tripper boosted Falkenberry's career school-record for home runs to 40.
Kayla Gray opened the sixth with a single to right field to break up Megan Bashak's no-hit bid. Callie Dennison reached on an error, and Kristen Boros followed with a single to score Gray. Meaghan Sullivan followed with a single to score Dennison, and Falkenberry cleared the bases with her shot over the right field fence. But Bashak settled down to retire the final two batters she faced in the sixth and then finished the game by striking out three Butler batters in the seventh.
Bashak, who went the distance on the mound to earn her fourth win of the season, gave the Vikings (14-34, 6-10 HL) an early lead with a two-run, home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Vikings added a single run in the fourth and then stretched the lead to 7-0 with four runs in the fifth.
Butler used three different pitchers in the game. Sophomore Leah Bry started and retired just one batter before being removed. She fell to 9-18 on the season. Senior Breanna Fisher threw four innings, before freshman Sarah Lowry finished the final one-and-two-thirds innings. The Vikings managed 11 hits off the three Butler hurlers.
The first game of the scheduled twinbill was postponed because of the weather, forcing the doubleheader on Sunday.
