Butler Blanks Youngstown State At League Tournament

VALPARAISO, IND. -- Sophomore Leah Bry tossed a three-hit shutout lead #5 Butler to a 3-0 victory over #4 Youngstown State in the opening game of the 2012 Horizon League Women's Softball Championship at Valparaiso on Wednesday, May 9.  The win lifts the Bulldogs to a second round match against top-seeded Valparaiso on Thursday, May 10.

Bry, who improved to 11-18 on the year, was in control from the start.  She allowed just two hits in the first four innings and just five base runners for the entire game.  She set the Penguins (28-20-1) down in order in the second, fourth and seventh innings.  The Butler righthander had four strikeouts and just two walks in the complete-game effort.

Butler (24-30) jumped in front in the second inning on a solo home run to center field by senior Erin Falkenberry.  It was her ninth home run of the season, boosting her Butler record for career home runs to 41, and one of two hits she had on the day.

The Bulldogs added a single run in the fourth on hits by freshman Kristen Boros and senior Lauren McNulty and a run-scoring single by senior Mallory Winters.  Butler's final run came in the seventh frame on a leadoff double by sophomore Callie Dennison, a sacrifice bunt by senior Jessica Huey and a sacrifice fly by senior Alyssa Coleman.

Bry struck out the first two batters she faced in the bottom of the seventh inning and then ended the contest with a ground out to Meaghan Sullivan at first base.

Butler moves on to face regular season champ Valparaiso in the double-elimination tournament.  The second round game at the VU Softball Field is slated for 11 a.m. (CT).
