Butler Coach Scott Hall Signs Contract Extension
Butler softball coach Scott Hall, coming off his third season at the helm of the Bulldogs, has signed a three-year contract extension that will take him through the 2015-16 academic year. In his first three seasons, Hall has compiled the third-highest win total in Butler softball history.

Riley Carter To Play For Canadian National Team
Butler shortstop Riley Carter was one of 17 athletes selected to the Canadian Junior National Team, and she’ll represent Canada at the 2013 International Softball Federation Junior World Championships in Brampton, Ontario. The international tournament, featuring 16 national teams, will be held, July 1-7.

The Butler softball team will hold an open tryout for students on Friday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m. The tryout for a position on the 2013-14 Butler team will be held at the Butler Softball Field.

Jenny Esparza, Kristin Gutierrez Named All-Conference
Butler pitchers Jenny Esparza and Kristin Gutierrez were among 33 players named to the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference Softball All-Conference Team, selected by a vote of league head coaches. The conference honor squad was released by the A-10 office on Tuesday, May 7.

Senior Jenny Esparza, who helped lead Butler to a season-ending four-game winning streak, has been named Atlantic 10 Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 5. Esparza is the first Butler softball player to earn the league’s weekly honor.

Butler supported two solid pitching performances with a strong offensive showing and closed out the 2013 softball campaign with a doubleheader sweep at Rhode Island on Sunday (May 5). The Bulldogs captured the opener, 6-2, and then finished the season with an 8-1 victory in the nightcap.

Senior Jenny Esparza and freshman Kristin Gutierrez combined on a one-hit shutout and Butler completed a sweep of defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion Massachusetts with a 2-0 victory on Saturday (May 4). The road win at Sortino Field lifted the Bulldogs to 9-9 in conference play.

Senior Jenny Esparza turned in a complete-game effort on the mound and Butler began a four-game road trip to the Northeast with a 4-2 victory over Massachusetts on Friday (May 3). The contest was the first of a two-game series between the Bulldogs and the Minutewomen.

Final Inning Rallies Lift Saint Louis Past Butler
Saint Louis used a couple of final inning rallies to spoil two strong pitching performances and hand host Butler a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference setback on Wednesday (April 24). The Billikens came from behind to take the opener 6-4 and then won the nightcap, 2-0, in eight innings.

Butler's doubleheader with Atlantic 10 Conference foe Saint Louis has been moved from Tuesday (April 23) to Wednesday (April 24), because of weather concerns in the Indianapolis area. The first game of the twinbill will start at 2 p.m.

Visiting Temple took advantage of big scoring innings in both games to hand Butler a pair of Atlantic 10 Conference setbacks at the Butler Softball Field on Sunday (April 21). The Owls captured the first game, 7-3, and then pulled out a come-from-behind, 5-2 decision in the second contest.

Sophomore Cassie Rupel drove in two clutch runs and freshman Kristin Gutierrez turned in another complete-game pitching gem to lift Butler to a 5-2 victory over Saint Joseph’s and a doubleheader split with the Atlantic 10 Conference leader on Saturday (April 20). Saint Joseph’s captured the opener at the Butler Softball Field, 5-4.

Butler's softball game against Saint Joseph's, scheduled for Friday (April 19), has been postponed because of wet field conditions. The Atlantic 10 Conference game will be played as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 20, starting at noon.

Butler's softball doubleheader against Saint Louis on Tuesday (April 16) was postponed because of heavy rain and thunderstorms in the Indianapolis area. No make-up date for the Atlantic 10 Conference twinbill has been set.

Senior Devin Dearing delivered a clutch double in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap a two-run rally and lift Butler to a 3-2 extra innings victory over visiting Fordham on Sunday (April 14). The dramatic win gave the Bulldogs a split in the Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader.

Butler used an offensive explosion in the first game and two solid pitching performances to sweep a doubleheader from visiting La Salle on Saturday, April 13. The Bulldogs captured the first game, 15-1 in five innings and then completed the sweep of their Atlantic 10 Conference foe with a 2-0 decision in the second contest.

Sophomore Megan Gray delivered a two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Butler a 7-6 victory and a two-game sweep over visiting Morehead State at the Butler Softball Field on Wednesday (April 10). The two wins opened a 12-game homestand for the Bulldogs.

Long-Ball Sinks Bulldogs
Host Ball State slugged five home runs and rolled past Butler, 11-2, in five innings in a non-conference game at the BSU Softball Complex on Tuesday (April 9). The run-shortened decision was the start of a stretch of seven games in six days for the Bulldogs.

Host George Washington took advantage of three unearned runs in the first inning and a complete-game pitching performance by Meghan Rico to hand Butler a 4-1 setback at the GW Softball Field on Saturday (April 6). The setback left the Bulldogs with a split of the two-game Atlantic 10 Conference series.

Pitchers Jenny Esparza and Kristin Gutierrez combined on a no-hitter and Butler tallied the game’s lone run in the seventh inning to slip past George Washington, 1-0, on Friday (April 5). The game was the first of a two-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at the GW Softball Field.

Host Miami (Ohio) used a pair of late rallies to hand Butler a pair of non-conference setbacks in a twinbill at the MU Softball Stadium on Tuesday (April 2). The RedHawks came from behind to win the opener, 5-4, in eight innings and then took the nightcap, 6-2.

Devin Dearing ignited a decisive three-run rally and three Butler pitchers allowed just two to help power the Bulldogs past IUPUI, 5-1, on Monday (April 1). The non-conference win lifted Butler to 11-14 on the young season.

Junior righthander Brittany MacFawn pitched a complete-game, one-hitter and Albany stopped Butler’s six-game winning streak with a 4-0 decision at the Rebel Games on Friday (March 15). The game was Butler’s final test in Florida.

Butler ran its Florida winning streak to six in a row with a pair of victories at the Rebel Games on Thursday, March 14. The Bulldogs defeated Army, 2-0, in their first game of the day and then came back with a 6-2 victory over Wagner in the second contest.

Butler continued to receive strong pitching performances and ran its current winning streak to four in a row with a pair of victories at the Rebel Games on Tuesday, March 12. The Bulldogs defeated Lehigh, 2-0, in the first game and then beat North Dakota, 4-2, in the second.

Butler, behind two more strong pitching performances, picked up a pair of wins on the second day of the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla. The Bulldogs defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0, in their first game of the day, before coming back with another 3-0 victory over Saint Peter's.

Despite two strong pitching performances, Butler came up short in its first two contests at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla., on Sunday, March 10. The Bulldogs dropped a 2-1 decision to Akron in the first game in Florida and then fell to Creighton, 3-0, in the second.

Bulldogs Fall Twice At SIU Coach B Classic
Butler managed just seven hits on the day and wound up dropping two games in the weather-shortened Coach B Classic, hosted by Southern Illinois University of Sunday, March 3. Northern Illinois edged the Bulldogs, 3-2, in the opener, before Butler fell to host SIU, 9-0, in the nightcap.

Due to winter weather, the schedule for the Southern Illinois University Coach B Classic, originally set for March 2-3, has been changed. The tournament now will have three games on Sunday, March 3, and one game on Monday, March 4.

Butler Defeats Tennessee State In Tournament Finale
Senior Meaghan Sullivan had three hits and scored a pair of runs and junior Leah Bry turned in a complete game pitching performance to lead Butler to a 7-3 victory over host Tennessee State in the final game of the Tennessee State Tiger Invitational on Sunday (Feb. 24). The Bulldogs finished the tournament with a pair of wins.

Butler rebounded from a heart-breaking, 1-0, loss to IUPUI to post a convincing, 8-3, victory over Morgan State on the first day of the Tennessee State Tiger Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 23. The victory was the Bulldogs’ first of the young softball season.

Butler’s bid for its first 2013 softball victory came up short when Missouri State rallied for five runs in its final three innings to take a 5-2 decision on the final day of the Georgia Tech/Kennesaw State Invitational. The Bulldogs left the three-day tournament in Atlanta, Ga., with an 0-5 record.

Bulldogs Drop Two Tournament Games
Two strong pitching performances held Butler in check on the second day of the Georgia Tech-Kennesaw State Invitational, and the Bulldogs wound up dropping two contests. Co-host Kennesaw State outlasted Butler, 6-2, in the first game and then Eastern Michigan defeated the Bulldogs, 8-0 in five innings, in the second.

Butler Falls Twice In Georgia
Butler ran into a pair of strong opponents on the opening day of the 2013 softball season and wound up dropping two games on the first day of the Georgia Tech-Kennesaw State Invitational. The Bulldogs lost to Eastern Michigan, 6-1, in the first game of the tournament and then fell to host Georgia Tech, 24-4, in five innings.

Butler will be chasing the favorites in this year’s Atlantic 10 Conference softball race, according to the preseason poll of the league’s 12 head coaches. The Bulldogs were tabbed seventh in the poll, released by the A-10 office on Tuesday (Jan. 22).

Butler Signs Four Softball Recruits
Butler softball coach Scott Hall added both power and pitching to his roster with the signing of four talented players during the NCAA Division I Fall Signing Period. The third-year coach received signed commitments from Brandyce Sallee of Cascade High School (Ind.), Alison Tarrant of Mahomet-Seymour High School (Ill.), Kacey Starwalt of Mattoon High School (Ill.) and Chelsea Norwood of Greenwood High School (Ind.).

Kayla Gray To Forego Final Softball Season
Butler fifth-year senior Kayla Gray has decided not to use her final season of softball eligibility. The Butler shortstop, who started 52 games for the Bulldogs last season, will graduate in December.
