Butler Falls Twice In Georgia

ATLANTA, GA. -- Butler ran into a pair of strong opponents on the opening day of the 2013 softball season and wound up dropping two games on the first day of the Georgia Tech-Kennesaw State Invitational.  The Bulldogs lost to Eastern Michigan, 6-1, in the first game of the tournament and then fell to host Georgia Tech, 24-4, in five innings.

Maria Leichty scored Butler's lone run in the opener on a bases-loaded walk to senior Devin Dearing.  Eastern Michigan starting pitcher Jenna Ignowski walked the bases loaded in the inning.

Eastern Michigan jumped in front in the first inning on a two-run home run by Amanda Stanton.  The Eagles added three runs in the fourth inning and a single run on  a solo home run by Nellie Coquillard in the fifth frame.

Junior Leah Bry, who pitched the first three-and-two-thirds innings for the Bulldogs, suffered the loss.

Butler's offense picked up in the second game, but not enough against the potent Yellow Jackets.  The host squad scored a pair of runs in the first inning, added five more in the second and then put things away with a 12-run third frame.  Butler scored single runs in the first and fifth innings and a pair of runs in the third.

Sophomore Kristen Boros had a pair of runs batted in for the Bulldogs, one on a sacrifice fly and one on a ground out.   Freshman Kristin Gutierrez, who pitched the first two innings for the Bulldogs, was saddled with the loss.

Butler will continue play in the tournament with a pair of games at Kennesaw State on Saturday, Feb. 9.  The Bulldogs will play host Kennesaw State at 2 p.m. (ET), before facing Eastern Michigan for a second time at 4 p.m.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 10.
