INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Devin Dearing ignited a decisive three-run rally and three Butler pitchers allowed just two to help power the Bulldogs past IUPUI, 5-1, on Monday (April 1). The non-conference win lifted Butler to 11-14 on the young season.
Dearing, pinch-hitting for Krosley Ogden, delivered a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Megan Gray followed with a single to plate the go-ahead run and Kristin Boros added a sacrifice fly to give Butler a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fifth inning for the final margin. Meaghan Sullivan scored the first run on a throwing error by the Jaguars, while Riley Carter drove in the second with a single.
Leah Bry, Taylor Lockwood and Kristin Gutierrez combined to limit IUPUI to a single run on just two hits. Bry pitched the first three innings and gave up a single run on one hit. Lockwood blanked the Jaguars on no hits for two innings and picked up the win to improve to 2-2 on the season, while Gutierrez pitched two shutout innings to close the game. Bry struck out six, Lockwood fanned five and Gutierrez added three strikeouts.
The Bulldogs tagged three IUPUI pitchers for eight hits, with shortstop Riley Carter going two-for-two with a run scored and one RBI.
Some fans attending the game may have thought it was an April Fools Day joke when they noticed that the Bulldogs were the visiting team in the game at the Butler Softball Field. But the game, originally scheduled to be played at IUPUI, was moved to Butler because of field conditions, and the Jaguars retained home team status.
Butler will continue a busy week with a non-conference doubleheader at Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday (April 2). The first game is slated for 5 p.m. (ET).
