Kristin Gutierrez Receives BIG EAST Honor
INDIANAPOLIS—Butler sophomore Kristin Gutierrez, who was nearly perfect in her only pitching performance last week, has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. She's the second Butler softball player to be honored by the conference this season.
Gutierrez pitched a five-inning no-hitter against Northern Kentucky, while leading Butler to an 11-0 run-shortened victory. She faced 17 batters, just two over the minimum, and recorded five strikeouts. The second-year left-hander retired Northern Kentucky in order in three of the five innings and allowed only one runner to advance as far as second base.
The Highlands Ranch, Colo., has a 2.90 earned run average in 17 appearances, including 15 starts. She has a 6-8 record with a team-high 80 strikeouts. Gutierrez joins teammate Leah Bry, who was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week in late February.
Also recognized by the conference was senior infielder Krista Hakola, who was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her performance in Butler's doubleheader sweep of Northern Kentucky. Hakola had three hits in the two games, including a double, and drove in five runs in the two victories.
Butler will return to BIG EAST play this week with a three-game series at St. John's on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 1-2. The Bulldogs will return home to host Providence in a three-game set on Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6. The doubleheader against Providence on Saturday will start at noon at the Butler Softball Field, while the series will conclude with a single game at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
