Bulldogs Win Series Finale In New York
QUEENS N.Y.. -- Freshman Chelsea Norwood drove in three runs and scored a fourth and sophomore Kristin Gutierrez went the distance in the circle to lead Butler to a 10-3 victory over host St. John's in the third game of a three-game BIG EAST series on Wednesday, April 2. The Bulldogs won two of the three games and improved to 12-20 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.
The Bulldogs unleashed a nine-hit attack and reached double-figures in runs for the second time in seven days. The 10 runs were the second-most scored by Butler this season, trailing only the 11-run output in a victory over Northern Kentucky last week.
Norwood had a pair of hits in the game, including her second collegiate home run. She drove a one-out pitch over the centerfield wall in the sixth inning to give Butler an 8-3 advantage. The Butler third baseman also drove in a run with a single in Butler's five-run third inning.
Gutierrez posted her 11th compete-game performance, while picking up her second win of the series and improving to 8-8. She surrendered seven hits and three walks, while recording three strikeouts.
Butler grabbed control of the game with five runs on just two hits in the third inning. The Bulldogs took advantage of four walks and a couple of hit batters to fuel the rally. Krista Hakola provided the biggest blow of the inning with a two-run double, while Norwood added a run-scoring single.
Hakola led Butler's offensive attack with three hits, while Sarah Gronowski joined Norwood with a pair of hits. Freshman Alex Kotter scored three runs for the Bulldogs, while Kristen Boros and Gronowski each scored twice.
Butler will return to Indianapolis to continue BIG EAST play with a three-game series against Providence, beginning on Saturday, April 5, at noon at the Butler Softball Field.
