Iowa State, behind the hot-hitting trio of Carrie Monroe, Courtney Wray and Jacquelyn Beatty, scored in five of the first six innings and captured a 9-1 decision over Butler on the final day of the Sleep Inn Classic hosted by North Texas State University. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-5 on the young season.
Monroe, Wray and Beatty combined for eight hits, three runs and nine runs batted in. The Cyclones (13-2), who had 11 hits as a team, scored three runs in the first inning, single tallies in the second and fourth frames and two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the first inning when sophomore Erin Jackson doubled to left center field, stole third and crossed the plate on an error by Wray. Jackson's hit was one of four Butler managed off of Iowa State starter Charissa Carlin. Alex Boros, Melissa Shofroth and Lauren McNulty had Butler's other hits.
Freshman Breanna Fisher pitched three and two-thirds innings for the Bulldogs and allowed five runs, while suffering her second defeat. Sophomore Kristen Malinkey pitched the final two and third innings in relief.
Butler junior outfielder Alex Boros was named to the 12-player All-Tournament Team following the three-day competition. Boros batted .357 with a team-high five hits, including two doubles, in the tournament.
The Bulldogs will return to action on March 8 at the Rebel Games in Orlando, Fla.
