Butler Rally Comes Up Short At UIC
Senior Alex Boros and junior Bridget Paine sparked a late Butler rally, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early 10-0 deficit and the Bulldogs fell at UIC, 12-8, in the final game of a three-game, Horizon League series at Flames Field on Sunday (March 22). The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 6-14 on the season and 0-3 in league play.
Boros scored two runs and drove in two more in Butler's three-inning rally, while Paine contributed a pair of hits and two runs scored. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the fourth inning, one in the fifth and three in the sixth and had two runners on base in the seventh inning, before the final out was made.
UIC (8-17, 3-0 Horizon) tagged Butler pitchers Breanna Fisher and Lauren Ott for 10 runs on 11 hits in the first three innings. Junior Kristen Malinkey limited the Flames to two runs on two hits over the final three and a third innings.
Boros and Paine led off the fourth inning with singles and freshman Mallory Winters followed with a run-scoring single. Paine then scored on the second half of a double steal, with pinch-runner Jen Arriaga taking second. A ground out moved Arriaga to third, and she scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren McNulty. Lindsay Schluge's run-scoring double down the leftfield line closed out the scoring in the inning.
Paine singled and scored again in the fifth inning, when leftfielder Sarah Clynes dropped a fly ball hit by Winters. Butler's final three runs in the sixth inning came on a two-run single by Boros and a UIC throwing error.
Boros finished the game with three hits and two runs batted in, while Paine had two hits in two official trips to the plate. The Bulldogs had nine hits as a team. Clynes led UIC with two hits and five RBI's.
The Bulldogs will play non-league doubleheaders at Evansville (Wednesday, March 25) and at home against Dayton (Thursday, March 26), before returning to Horizon League play with a three-game series at Detroit (March 28-29).
