Junior Lindsay Schluge drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and Butler held on for a 4-3 victory over Ball State in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader in Muncie on Tuesday (March 16). The host Cardinals won the opener, 6-2.
The Bulldogs (10-9) took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning of the nightcap, but Ball State rallied with two runs off of Butler relief pitcher Nikki Naffziger to tie the game. Sophomore Jen Arriaga began the top of the eighth inning on second base, under international tie-breaker rules, and she advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Naffziger. Schluge then followed with a double to right center field to plate Arriaga with the go-ahead run.
Naffziger set down the final three batters she faced in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim her team-leading fifth win of the season.
Butler jumped in front in the first inning on a hit batter, a double by junior Alex Boros and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Bridget Paine. The Bulldogs added runs in the third inning on a run-scoring single by senior Amy Hyerczyk and seventh inning on back-to-back doubles by Paine and Hyerczyk.
Ball State (18-14) opened a 4-0 lead in the first game, before Boros cut the lead in half with a two-run, home run in the top of the fifth. But the Cardinals closed out the win by adding two more runs and blanking the Bulldogs in the final two innings.
Schluge, Boros, Hyerczyk and junior Annie Dolan each had three hits in the twinbill. Hyerczyk and Boros each drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore Jennifer Chasteen pitched the first five innings of the second game, and she allowed just one run on five hits. Naffziger finished the final three innings. Sophomore Kristen Malinkey pitched all six innings of the first game.
The Bulldogs will host Purdue in a doubleheader at the Butler Softball Field on Wednesday. The first game is slated for 3 p.m.
