Butler Splits Non-League Doubleheader At Bradley
March 29, 2007
Junior Jenny Jacobs drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning and senior Jamie Wonderly turned in a complete game pitching performance to lead Butler to a 4-2 victory over Bradley in the second game of a doubleheader at Laura Bradley Park in Peoria, Ill., on Wednesday, March 28. The host Braves won the rain-delayed first game, 1-0.
Jacobs scored senior JoAnna Zumbrun with a one-out single in the sixth inning of the second game to break a 2-2 deadlock and give Butler (9-10) the lead for good. It was the second hit of the game for Jacobs and her second RBI. Sophomore Alex Boros followed with a double to centerfield, scoring junior Amy Hyerczyk with the final run of the game.
Wonderly blanked the Braves (14-10) over the final three innings of the contest to pick up her fourth win in seven decisions. She allowed just six hits in the contest and surrendered solo runs in the second and fourth innings. The Butler righthander had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but she retired the final two batters to shut down the rally.
Jacobs had two hits and two RBIs in the Butler win. Hyerczyk added a pair of hits, while Boros had two RBIs.
Butler dropped the first game of the twinbill, despite a strong pitching performance by freshman Jennifer Chasteen. The Butler righthander allowed just six hits and one earned run in six innings of work. She had three strikeouts and just one walk in the contest.
Bradley scored the lone run of the contest on a double by Miriam Wegmann in the bottom of the third inning. The Braves held on behind the strong pitching of sophomore Ashley Birdsong, who picked up her sixth shutout and 11th victory of the season. The first game was delayed for 83 minutes by a rain shower.
Butler will host Notre Dame College in a doubleheader at Midwest Sports Complex on Friday, March 30. The first game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
