Bulldogs Sweep Doubleheader With Notre Dame

Butler pounded out 17 hits and scored 18 runs in two games to complete a sweep of visiting Notre Dame College in a non-league doubleheader at Midwest Sports Complex on Friday, March 30. The Bulldogs won the opener in five innings, 11-0, and then took the nightcap, 6-1. The two wins lifted Butler to 11-10 on the year, while Notre Dame slipped to 10-5.

Sophomore Lindsay Schluge had three hits and drove in two runs and freshman Melissa Shofroth added a pair of hits and four RBI's to spark the Bulldogs in the first game. Schluge hit safely in her first three trips to the plate and had run-scoring singles in the second and third innings. Shofroth had both of her hits and all four RBI's in Butler's nine-run third inning.

The Bulldogs grabbed an early 2-0 lead on Schluge's run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly by JoAnna Zumbrun in the second inning, The home squad then put things out of reach with nine runs on seven hits in the third frame.

Senior Jamie Wonderly blanked the Falcons on three hits in her five innings of work for the Bulldogs. She retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced, and she allowed just three runners to advance beyond first base. The Butler righthander improved to 5-3 on the season.

Sophomores Alex Boros and Annie Dolan carried the big bats for the Bulldogs in the second game. Both players had two hits in the game, and both slammed their first home run of the season. Boros had a solo shot to centerfield with one out in the fourth inning to give Butler the lead for good, and Dolan followed one out later with a two-run shot to leftfield.

Butler jumped in front with a single run in the first inning on a walk to Schluge, a sacrifice bunt by Zumbrun, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly by junior Jenny Jacobs. The Falcons, led by former Butler coach Tom Spencer, tied the game in the second inning, but the Bulldogs countered with the three-run third. Junior Kelly Cartwright added a two-run single in the sixth inning to close out the scoring.

Freshman Jennifer Chasteen was given the pitching start for Butler, and she allowed just one run on four hits through five innings. She had three strikeouts, while improving to 4-2 on the year. Junior Nikki Naffziger pitched the final two innings and earned her first save of the season.

Schluge finished the afternoon with four hits, while Shofroth added three hits. Nine different Butler players hit safely in the twinbill.

Butler will begin Horizon League play with a three-game series at Wright State on Saturday and Sunday, March 31-April 1. The two league squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. (EDT), and a single game on Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.
