Butler turned just three hits into two runs and captured a 2-0 decision from Eastern Illinois in the first game of a non-league doubleheader at Williams Field in Charleston, Ill., on Thursday (April 2). The second game was called in the bottom of the first inning because of heavy rains.
The Bulldogs scored single runs in the first and fourth innings off of Eastern Illinois starter Amber May. The initial, and eventual winning run, came on a walk to sophomore Erin Jackson, a single down the left field line by senior Alex Boros and an Eastern Illinois throwing error.
Butler then added an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning on a run-scoring double by freshman Paige Ashton. Freshman Mallory Winters was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and she advanced to second base on a single by freshman Erin Falkenberry before scoring on Ashton's shot to left-center field.
That was all the run-support that freshman righthander Breanna Fisher needed. She blanked the Panthers (19-13) on five hits, recording five strikeouts and just one walk. It was the third career shutout for the first-year pitcher.
Boros extended her current hitting streak to a team-best five straight games, while Ashton hit safely in her fourth consecutive game.
The Bulldogs (12-18) will return to Horizon League play with a three-game series at home against Cleveland State, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 4).
