Late-Innings Heroics Lead to Doubleheader Win at Wright State
April 3, 2005
Butler improved to 3-1 in Horizon League play and 13-12 overall with a pair of late-inning wins at Wright State Sunday in Dayton, Ohio. Freshman Nikki Naffziger pitched nine strong innings to lead the Bulldogs to a 4-2 win in the first game before the Bulldogs again used late-inning heroics to score a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Wright State falls to 6-8 (0-2) with the losses.
In the first game, Butler mounted a two-out rally in the top of the ninth to take a 4-2 win. Junior Angie Johnson's infield single scored senior Melissa Lemrick and then freshman Ashley Barry plated classmate Amy Hyerczyk with a double to give the Bulldogs an insurance run.
Wright State would put runners on second and third with one out before Naffziger induced a pop to third and then struck out her 13th Raider of the day to close out the contest. Naffziger improved to 9-4 on the season by allowing nine hits and just two earned runs.
Down 1-0 in the top of the fifth, the Bulldogs tied the contest when senior Maria Marchesano's RBI double scored sophomore JoAnna Gonzalez. The teams carried the 1-1 score into extra innings and each team scored a single run in their respective half of the eighth inning before Butler's ninth-inning heroics.
In the second game, Hyerczyk broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh with an RBI double that plated pinch-runner Lynn Hohs with two outs. Earlier in the game, Butler scored single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings on a Gonzalez RBI single and Johnson sacrifice fly.
Sophomore Jamie Wonderly got the win for the Bulldogs, improving to 3-2 on the season. She went seven innings and allowed just six hits and two runs.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
