Butler Splits Twinbill At Wright State
Butler came within one out of a doubleheader sweep, but wound up settling for a two-game split with Horizon League foe Wright State at the WSU Softball Field in Fairborn, Ohio, on Wednesday (April 8). The Bulldogs captured the first game, 6-1, before dropping the nightcap, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Two strong pitching efforts highlighted Butler's performance in the league twinbill. Freshman Breanna Fisher limited the host Raiders to a single run on six hits, while posting her seventh win of the season in the opener. In the second game, sophomore Lauren Ott (4-6) blanked the Raiders through six and two-thirds innings, before surrendering a walk-off home run.
The Bulldogs carried a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the final inning in the nightcap. Ott retired the first batter she faced, before giving up a double to pinch-hitter Allison Cox, just the fourth hit of the game for the Raiders. The Bulldogs retired outfielder Ashleigh Jackson on an infield pop-up, but designated hitter Katie Kline ended the game with a two-run, home run to right field.
Butler had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the game on a bases-loaded walk to freshman Erin Falkenberry. The Bulldogs recorded eight hits off of Wright State starter Sharon Palma (8-8), but managed just the single run.
Freshman Paige Ashton and senior Annie Dolan fueled a 12-hit attack by the Bulldogs in the opener with three hits apiece. Butler scored single runs in the first two innings to grab the early advantage and then added three runs in the fourth frame. Ashton keyed the fourth-inning rally with a two-run, home run to centerfield. The Bulldogs scored their final run in the sixth inning on a single by Erin Jackson and a triple by Ashton.
Jackson wound up scoring three runs on two hits in the game, while Dolan scored a pair of runs. Ashton, who had three RBIs in the win, was just a single away from hitting for the cycle in the game.
Butler (13-21, 4-6 Horizon League) and Wright State (20-17, 8-6 HL) will square off in the final game of the three-game series on Thursday, April 9. The rubber match is slated for 2 p.m. (ET) at the WSU Softball Field.
