Host Wright State jumped to a 4-0 lead and then held off Butler's comeback attempt to post a 4-2 victory in the final game of a three-game Horizon League series at the WSU Softball Field on Thursday, April 9. The victory gave the Raiders the series' advantage, 2-1.
Wright State (21-17, 9-6 Horizon League) broke a scoreless deadlock and took a 2-0 lead in the in bottom of the third inning on a two-run home run by Allison Cox. The Raiders added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a throwing error and a bases-loaded walk. The two unearned runs came on just one hit.
Hand-cuffed for four innings by Wright State starter Sharon Palma, the Bulldogs (13-22, 3-7 HL) finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning. Jen Arriaga opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. She then scored Butler's first run on a single by Paige Ashton, before Palma settled down and recorded three straight outs.
Butler struck again in the sixth inning on a one-out walk to Annie Dolan and a run-scoring double by Lauren McNulty. But McNulty was out on the play, trying to stretch the hit into a triple, and Palma again wiggled off the hook by getting Lindsay Schluge to ground out.
Both teams managed six hits in the game, but Wright State took advantage of two Butler errors to score the deciding runs. Ashton and McNulty led Butler's attack with a pair of hits each.
Freshman Breanna Fisher was given her second start against the Raiders, and she fell to 7-11 on the year, giving up two runs in three innings.
The Bulldogs will return home for a three-game Horizon League series against Green Bay, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11. The first game of the twinbill at the Butler Softball Field will begin at 1 p.m.
