Ashley Robison and Kathleen Jacoby combined on a four-hit shutout to lead visiting Eastern Illinois to a 7-0 victory over Butler in a rain-delayed, non-league game at the Butler Softball Diamond on Thursday, April 10. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was called because of darkness in the third inning.
The opener lasted more than four hours from start to finish with more than a two-hour rain delay in the middle. The Panthers (13-16) jumped to a 3-0 lead off of Butler starter Nikki Naffziger and then had to wait out a long rain delay before finishing the contest against Butler relief pitchers Kristen Malinkey and Lauren Ott.
Robison and Jacoby, meanwhile, held Butler's bats in check. Robison allowed just two singles through four innings of work. She had four strikeouts and no walks. Jacoby pitched the final three innings, allowing just two more singles, while adding four more strikeouts.
The two teams attempted to play the second game, but it was called in the bottom of the third inning with Butler leading 4-1. A run-scoring double by junior Alex Boros and a two-run, home run by Paine gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead in the first inning. Butler added a fourth run in the second.
The Bulldogs (14-18) will return to Horizon League play on Saturday (April 12) with a doubleheader at home against Detroit. Butler's four senior players will be honored before the 1 p.m. opener.
